The Understory
Transforming What We Face Into How We Flourish
Summer 2026 | Issue 32
Every family has a story about the moment things shifted.
For Sofia, it was watching her youngest son Pedro fall apart at a family gathering, for what felt like the hundredth time, while her husband and her older son looked on with frustration she recognized, shared, and hated herself for sharing.
Pedro was eight. At home he was gentle, curious, easy to be with. In a crowd, especially when his four-year-old cousin Carlitos came barreling in, he became someone his family didn't recognize. His father called it defiance. His brother agreed.
Sofia wasn't so sure.
She was a businesswoman. She knew how to read a situation. She knew her son. And she knew, without yet having the words for it, that Pedro wasn't choosing this. Something else was happening beneath the surface.
Now enrolling Beyond Behavior: The Regulation Roadmap opens July 8.
What looked like defiance was a dysregulated nervous system doing the only thing it knew how to do: survive.
Sofia was a successful entrepreneur. She had spent years learning to read situations clearly and act decisively, even when the information was incomplete. So when Pedro's teachers began gently flagging that something seemed different about how he moved through the world, she didn't get defensive. She leaned in.
She pursued the diagnostic process the school recommended. She sat through evaluations, asked questions, took notes, and drove to appointments. When the results came back, they gave her language for what she had already known in her bones: Pedro's nervous system perceived the world differently. The noise, the chaos, the crush of bodies and social expectations at family gatherings were not minor inconveniences for him. They were overwhelming. His nervous system was sounding an alarm. And the only way it knew how to respond was through behavior.
What looked like defiance was a dysregulated nervous system doing exactly what dysregulated nervous systems do: trying to survive.
Sofia found a workshop I offered through the public schools and then enrolled in a summer course. What she brought with her was not just a desire to manage Pedro better. It was a genuine willingness to see her son differently. That willingness is rarer than it sounds. It asks something real of us: setting aside the story we have been telling, the one where our child is choosing to make things hard, and picking up a new one.
The new story is this: behavior is never the whole picture. Beneath every difficult moment is a nervous system communicating the only way it knows how. And when we learn to read that communication, everything changes.
Sofia did not just learn this for herself. She brought it home. She helped Pedro's father understand. She helped her older son understand. Slowly, the family stopped responding to Pedro's behavior with shame or discipline and started responding with curiosity. What is his nervous system telling us right now? What does he need? And how do we protect Carlitos while also protecting Pedro's dignity?
Beneath every difficult moment is a nervous system communicating the only way it knows how.
Sofia did not fix Pedro. Pedro was not broken. What she did was something harder and more important: she changed the lens through which her entire family saw him. And that changed how they loved him.
She also did not do it alone. She did it in community, in rooms with other parents who were exhausted and confused and unwilling to give up. That companionship matters more than most parenting programs acknowledge. The work of seeing your child's nervous system clearly is not just intellectual. It is emotional. It asks you to grieve the story you had, to sit with your own discomfort, and to build something new, often while the hard moments are still happening.
That is exactly the work we do together inside Beyond Behavior: The Regulation Roadmap. Six weeks, live and recorded, with a weekly Q&A community call. For parents of neurodivergent children with ADHD, autism, learning differences, and overlapping diagnoses. It does not start with your child's behavior. It starts with your nervous system, because your regulated presence is one of the most powerful things you can offer your child.
